Patients are typically admitted to the unit on a Monday. With this in-depth evaluation, our team will be able to create an individualized treatment plan. During your stay, our physician team may reduce your intake of anti-seizure medication, or you may be asked to remain awake later than usual to cause sleep deprivation. The goal of your stay is to identify triggers for your seizures and establish a specific type of epilepsy. Triggers can differ from person to person, but common triggers include tiredness and lack of sleep, flashing lights, stress, alcohol and not taking prescribed medications. Triggers are situations that can bring on a seizure in some people with epilepsy. All rooms where LTVM takes place will be equipped with comfortable bedding for their overnight stays. We ask that patients are accompanied by a family member or loved one during their stay. If an episode of unusual movements or a seizure occurs, please do not block the camera. Please note the location of the camera in your room. This event button should be used at the beginning of each seizure to notify the nursing and technician team. You will be provided with an event button. The LTVM patient rooms are hardwired with infrared video cameras and microphones to capture any events during your stay. You will be unable to wash your hair or shower until the monitoring is completed, however you may wash at the sink or use wash basins that are provided. The attached EEG wires are long enough for you to move about within the LTVM rooms.

The EEG data is recorded continuously during your stay and reviewed daily by the registered technician and the neurology team. Upon beginning this procedure you must remain still and in a flat position for a short period of time for the electrodes to be successfully and accurately applied. A specially trained EEG technician will carefully attach EEG electrodes to your head. Long Term Video Monitoring (LTVM) is a specialized form of electroencephalogram (EEG)(LINK TO EEG) in which the patient is continuously monitored on video while brainwave activity is recorded.
